Apartment Dwellers, Dirty Pest Control Secrets, and Cock Roaches

Secrets of the pest control and apartment industry

Dear Jitterbug Jerry
I live in an apartment and have cockroaches but I swear it’s clean. They keep treating but it doesn’t seem to work. Should I still hire a pest control company even though my apartment complex sprays the outside?

Dear Amy,
Good question. First off, having roaches doesn’t mean that you have a dirty apartment. Roaches have been around since before humans were. Plus, they maybe coming in from outside, from a neighbors’ apartment, in fact from a whole lot of places.

I’m going to let you in on a secret. Yes, there are bug secrets btw. Generally, pest control companies can get paid less than $1 per unit when it comes to pest control at apartment complexes. Frequently, what happens is these pest control companies spray your doorways and window edges very quickly and tend to not care about . Sometimes, they will go in and spray around the cabinets and that’s it. And sadly some don’t use the best chemicals combination that they can due to budget limits.

So, you can see why we don’t do apartment complexes. Jitterbug Pest Services has relied on a commitment to doing the job right for nearly two decades to the people of San Antonio. We kid a lot about ants and roaches but what we can’t ignore is the fact that they are a legitimate health issue.

Roaches don’t just get into food and adulterate it, they are full of pathogens. Those pathogens can lead to numerous diseases and ailments. Asthma is a problem in our community, but thankfully not as bad as some cities. However, roaches can give off allergens than can make your asthma worse. Also, roaches don’t just crawl on top of your carpet, they can also crawl underneath. Do you have anyone in your household that frequently crawls around on the carpets? Exactly.

So how do most apartment complexes (there are some awesome exceptions that do a great job btw) treat for roaches? They spray the areas I mentioned before, and maybe drop some bait. So what do we do?

FOUR PRONG PROFESSIONAL APPROACH

First off, we take a multi step approach to killing roaches. We don’t just spray and pray. Quite the contrary. Depending on your situation, we use baits, sprays, dusts, and granules.

  • Baits – awesome little timebombs that roaches eat and spread through their community. They take a while but really get to the root of the problem.
  • Spraying – it allows us to get into those cracks and crevices that baits don’t reach. We also vary which spray we use depending on which roaches you have. Yes, that actually can make a difference.
  • Dusts – pretty old school but they work great for cracks and crevices in your foundation or brickwork, or maybe some big gaps in woodwork. In some situations, we use a thin layer on a surface to provide really long term killing.
  • Granules – Since you mentioned you are in an apartment, this probably doesn’t apply to you. But if you have a condo with a yard are, give a look. Granules are great for spreading on lawns. Yes, cockroaches really love lawns. Think about it, where do you think roaches lived those millions of years before we had houses?

OVER THE COUNTER SOLUTIONS

So, you want to save some money and buy bug killer from the super market. Do they work? Yes, they do to a limited extent. The problem with the OTC solutions is that since they aren’t being applied by a trained professional, they have to make the sprays as safe as possible for humans. What ends up happening is it doesn’t kill the bugs and they get away only to spread their resistance off to their babies.

Who hasn’t sprayed a cockroach with a can of bug spray only to have the roach kinda look at you and laugh? Exactly.
